The National Museum of Damascus is one of Syria’s most important museums and preserves collections representing the country’s history from prehistoric times through the ancient Near Eastern, Classical, Byzantine, Islamic, and later periods. Its collections include sculptures, cuneiform tablets, inscriptions, jewellery, ceramics, mosaics, coins, manuscripts, and objects discovered at archaeological sites throughout Syria. Among its most remarkable displays are reconstructed architectural elements and wall paintings from important sites such as Dura-Europos, as well as artefacts associated with Ugarit, Mari, Palmyra, and other centres of ancient Syrian civilisation.
