The Louvre Museum preserves an important collection of artefacts from ancient Palmyra, reflecting the distinctive artistic, religious, funerary, and cultural traditions of the city. Among the collection are Palmyrene sculptures and funerary portraits carved in limestone, many bearing inscriptions in Palmyrene Aramaic that record the names and family relationships of the deceased. These objects provide valuable evidence for the people, language, dress, jewellery, beliefs, and burial customs of ancient Palmyra.
